Audition Materials

Front Ensemble Battery

Each individual auditioning for snare or quads will be asked to perform one of the exercises (of their choice) from top to bottom

Loose
This exercise is intended to work varying heights of legato strokes, while relying heavily on pulse, strong inner beat sound, and rhythmic interpretation. It should be played comfortably at 192bpm, with a consistent flowing motion and general lack of staccato downstrokes. It accompanies Hotei Tomoyasu's 'Battle Without Honor or Humanity' from the soundtrack to Kill Bill Vol.1 . Counting sixteen bars from the beginning of the song will end at A. Each section of the exercise will be approached individually at the audition, but complete memorization is expected. Mark Time will be done to the half note.

Multiple
This exercise is intended to work double and triple strokes in a variety of different contexts. The idea is to approach the 'breakdown' of roll and paradiddle passages with the same intensity as a normal double beat or triple beat stroke. Multiple should be played comfortably around 136bpm. The exercise fits nicely with John Mayer's "Dreaming with a Broken Heart" from the Continuum album.

Burn
Combining a large vocabulary of flam and roll based rudiments, this exercise truly tests 'slow tempo' rhythmic interpretations. Using a familiar progressive pattern, Burn is intended to challenge the consistency of sound quality throughout passages requiring advanced height and speed control. Paying close attention to notated heights should encourage a flow of endurance rather than hinder the motion of the hands. This exercise accompanies Stevie Wonder's 'Higher Ground', which can be found on his 'Original Musiquarium' album, Volume II. The two bar pickup in this exercise enters after the first two bars of the track at 125bpm; the lyrics begin at B.

A Note About the Battery Exercises:

The program this year is designed to give a better feel of musically contextual playing. More timing and listening responsibilities should encourage the battery to play more consciously as a whole. While the exercises are long, there are few. I hope these encourage players to analyze their own individual application of 'basic' notions and principles to a more 'musical' environment.

Playing with the songs listed is strongly encouraged, though not completely necessary. Although a metronome may provide a very similar feel for quarter note tempo, it will certainly not provide the same sense of accompanying other musicians with your own part. At the auditions, we will approach each segment of the exercises individually. However, complete memorization is expected of notes, rehearsal markings and a mark-time responsibility.

My intent is to make learning and playing these exercises more fun than work, how drumming should always feel!

Good Luck, and I look forward to seeing everyone at auditions.
